The survival of these six precious animals are threatened by human activity; Fruit doves are threatened with extinction on their native islands. The Sumatran elephant was changed from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered” in 2012 because half of its population has been lost in one generation. The Amur leopard is critically endangered - it is poached for its beautiful, spotted fur. Recent declines (of up to 50% since 2000) have been recorded in Harbour Seal populations in Orkney, Shetland, the Moray Firth and Firth of Tay. The Sumatran Orangutan is critically endangered, as a result of deforestation for palm oil plantations. And the state of the poor Polar Bear is all too well known...
