JAKE SPICER
My work as an educator, author and artist revolve around drawing. I believe that drawing can be a powerful
tool for social change, communication, and investigation. Drawing helps us to explore the world around us
through tactile marks and I wanted to bring that attitude of engaged looking to the work I made in response
to Knepp. My family history is rooted in the agricultural landscape of rural West Sussex and drawing from the
rewilded farmland of the estate helped me to reflect on that history, my relationship to the traditional
imagery of the pastoral idyll and my current understanding of what a flourishing natural environment might
look like. The finished work I have developed is as much about people as it is about place – a study of how
individuals respond to familiar surroundings becoming increasingly alien, exciting and wild as the tight
controls we exert on the land become loosened.
